Omnifactory

Founder of the project, DamienReave99, came back from hiatus, and banned multiple users participating in the project's Discord politics channel. Lead maintainer, Exa, disagreed with these actions, reverted the bans, and hard-forked Omnifactory into Nomifactory. On the 11th of November 2022, Omnifactory was sold to TheBobs Gaming Network, as indicated by this Discord announcement.

The snapshot is so old that it cannot be downloaded through any launcher, it's not even officially publicly available.

Controversies Surrounding Azanor and the Development of Thaumcraft

Azanor, creator of the Thaumcraft Minecraft mod, has been criticized for using uncredited assets, including the Thaumonomicon icon, which was taken directly from the game Tibia (Wikipedia). Other reused textures have also been identified.
It is worth to note, that Azanor has issued DMCA takedowns against projects containing decompiled Thaumcraft code.
Azanor retired from modding around January 2019.

Mowzie's Mobs Barakoa Controversy

The author of the mod Mowzie's Mobs, Bob Mowzie, has announced the barakoa mob will be reworked, because some people consider it racist.
u/independence15 made an in-depth Reddit post about contacting the Mowzie's Mobs Team about the issue. The post also explains the motivations.
The controversy was sparked by a clip of FitMC encountering the Barakoa mob, and saying the phrases "onga bonga", and "ooga booga" to them.

Neoforged

On July 13th, 2023, cpw (X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky (external archive)) announced a hard fork of the Forge project: NeoForged (external archive). The reason was parting way with LexManos, founder of Forge. LexManos owns the brand, thus, the fork had to rebrand. Cpw states that "Lex has been a problem in the modding community for many, many years". It is not mentioned in the article, but LexManos liked some controversial xeets on X (formerly Twitter), it is speculated that this was the primary separation reason.

Divine Journey 2 Totemic Ableism

Early September 2021, some Divine Journey 2 users accused the rythm-based Totemic rituals of being discriminatory towards people with no rythm, or disabilities.

Russian Modrinth censorship

Around early October 2025, the Russian government contacted the Modrinth team, and requested the takedown of "LGBTQ+-themed" mods. The Modrinth team reports weighing their options for five hours, and proceeds to comply: "We believed that removing the four projects was less censorship than losing access to Modrinth entirely for Russian users". On the next day, the team backtracked on their decision: "That choice, made under pressure and with little time, was short-sighted. It was not consistent with our values, our support of the LGBTQ+ community, or our stance against censorship".

Quark BLM Screen

On June 6th, Vazkii, the author of the Quark mod, uploaded its version r2.1-241, for Minecraft 1.15.2. The changelog states Bug fixes and performance improvements. This version introduces a black screen with a 8m46s countdown, which is displayed upon pressing the single or multiplayer button. The screen tells about George Floyd & the Black Lives Matter movement, and, upon clicking, redirects to blacklivesmatter.carrd.co (local archive, external archive). A subsequent version (r2.1-244), made the black screen appear only once per Minecraft instance.

A couple mods were created, which removed the message, and were removed by Curseforge [source 1 (local archive, external archive), source 2 (local archive, external archive)]. A Quark fork named "Buark" (local archive, external archive), was also removed.
